The challenge this year is to write a non-fiction story based on the theme “ I should have known better…” Have you learned from a mistake, gotten into a bind due to your own actions or done something your instincts told you not to do?  While it’s not necessary that you mention the exact words of the theme in your story, it should be obvious to readers, if only subtly.

Prizes are $500 for first place, $300 for second place and $100 for third place. Winners will be published in the Winnipeg Free Press and The Collective Consciousness, the journal of the Writers’ Collective. All winners receive a one-year Writers’ Collective membership.

Contest rules:

Entries not complying with these rules will be disqualified. Contest is for new and emerging writers. Writers must be 18 or older. Entries must be original, unpublished works of non-fiction, in story form, no more than 1200 words in length. No essays, rants, reviews or dramatic scripts please. Manuscripts must be typed, double-spaced, one side only, on 8.5 x 11 paper. Three copies must be included. Please staple individual stories. Your real name must not appear on the manuscripts. Entry fee is $5 for Writers’ Collective members, $10 for non-members. For information on membership, email writerscollective@uwinnipeg.ca Entries must be postmarked no later than Monday, November 2nd 2009, and must include this entry form. Entries accepted by mail ONLY – no emails or drop offs please.  Photocopies are acceptable. A written evaluation of your entry is available for an extra $20. All cheques must be made payable to the Writers’ Collective. No manuscripts will be returned. Winners will be notified at the end of November.
