The Writers’ Collective is pleased to announce its annual Poetry Contest.

Prizes are: First ($150), Second ($100), and Third ($50). All winners will be published in The Collective Consciousness, the quarterly journal of The Writers’ Collective.

RULES:

Writers must be 18 or older. Only original, unpublished poetry may be submitted, maximum 42 lines per poem. Poems should be typed, using spacing of poet’s choice, one side only, on 8.5 x 11 inch white paper. Author’s real name should not appear anywhere on the manuscript. Minimum of 3 poems per entry, maximum of 6. Enter as often as you like, only one prize awarded per person. Each new entry of 3-6 poems should include an entry fee. Fee is $10 per entry, $5 for Writers’ Collective members. Submit three copies of each poem. Entries must be postmarked by no later than November 2nd, 2009.

A written evaluation of your entry is available for an additional fee of $20; cheques made payable to the Writers’ Collective. Please allow 10-12 weeks from contest deadline date for evaluations.  Manuscripts will not be returned. The challenge this year is to write a non-fiction story based on the theme “ I should have known better…” Have you learned from a mistake, gotten into a bind due to your own actions or done something your instincts told you not to do?  While it’s not necessary that you mention the exact words of the theme in your story, it should be obvious to readers, if only subtly.

Prizes are $500 for first place, $300 for second place and $100 for third place. Winners will be published in the Winnipeg Free Press and The Collective Consciousness, the journal of the Writers’ Collective. All winners receive a one-year Writers’ Collective membership.

Contest rules:

Entries not complying with these rules will be disqualified. Contest is for new and emerging writers. Writers must be 18 or older. Entries must be original, unpublished works of non-fiction, in story form, no more than 1200 words in length. No essays, rants, reviews or dramatic scripts please. Manuscripts must be typed, double-spaced, one side only, on 8.5 x 11 paper. Three copies must be included. Please staple individual stories. Your real name must not appear on the manuscripts. Entry fee is $5 for Writers’ Collective members, $10 for non-members. members) must include the $5 entry fee and postcard. Cheques should be made payable to the Writers’ Collective. Please submit 3 copies of each story and postcard. Stories should be typed, double- spaced, printed one-sided on 8.5 x 11 paper, and stapled individually. Stories
