The Writers’ Collective

Programs and Services

Our programs and services include:

Contests
The Writers’ Collective holds four annual contests (open to everyone), in the following areas: poetry, postcard fiction, fiction and non-fiction (the latter two in association with the Winnipeg Free Press). Contest winners receive cash prizes and publication.

Workshops

From September to May, the Writers’ Collective holds workshops on a variety of subjects, facilitated by qualified writing professionals. Some past topics include: freelance writing, marketing one’s work, writing as a business, tapping into creativity, poetry, mystery writing, travel writing, children’s books, graphic novels and blogging.

Writers’ Circles

Are you interested in receiving feedback on your writing? Our Writers’ Circles are small critique groups that meet monthly. They give writers an opportunity to share work in progress and receive constructive criticism from the professional facilitator and group members. Circles are open to Writers’ Collective members for an additional annual fee.

100 Minutes with an Author

This series, in partnership with the Winnipeg Public Library, allows readers to connect with local authors as they present free lectures on the craft of writing, offer short readings, and take part in a Q & A period.

The Collective Consciousness

The Collective Consciousness is the quarterly journal of the Writers’ Collective. Each issue features markets, contests, articles, activities, writing by our members and contest winners, and more! Submissions not chosen for publication receive a succinct and constructive critique. The journal is a good place for new and emerging writers to publish their work and receive feedback.

Speaking Crow

The Writers’ Collective hosts Speaking Crow, Winnipeg’s longest running open-mic, on the first Tuesday of every month at Aqua Books (274 Garry Street). The evening opens with a reading from a local poet followed by two open-mic sets. We are also involved in other reading series at Aqua Books including the Free Your Mind and Lansdowne Poetry Reading Series with Aqua Books.

Visit the Aqua Books page for Speaking Crow, here.
